Campaign for Free Hotel Wi-Fi

wifi-campaignI stumbled upon this campaign on Twitter today and my first reaction was “HURRAY!”. This is an excellent cause – hoteliers need to realise that free internet is becoming an increasingly decisive factor when people choose a hotel. If you (as a hotelier) aren’t convinced, check out some of the comments in the World of James Free Hotel Wi-Fi. Many booking engines nowadays include the option of filtering hotels which provide a free Wi-Fi service. With a single mouse-click, a whole array of hotels is wiped out from the search results as a consequence of not offering free Wi-Fi.

Free internet access should be treated as an additional service, like concierge services or complimentary bottled water in the rooms, and not be seen as ancillary income. By providing free internet access, hotels nurture goodwill with their customers. Compare it with the impact of a smiling, friendly face at the reception counter when a guest checks in, or providing restaurant or sightseeing tips. I’m convinced that the value of satisfied customers who return time and time again far exceeds the marginal income earned from charging for internet access.

Check out this campaign and contribute to the discussion. If you’re visiting London soon, check out this related article by London Hotel Insight that lists hotels which provide free Wi-Fi.

Thanks for bringing this campaign to our attention, Keith. Another benefit of having all hotels include things like free WiFi is that it will make it easier for consumers to understand the real cost of a hotel room. We see many hotels discounting their room rate only to surprise guests with a range of fees for services. We’d like to see the hospitality industry act more hospitable.
